Why Hire a Board-Certified Attorney?
No Higher Standard for Personal Injury Representation in Tucson
Many individuals may assume that a personal injury lawyer automatically specializes in that area of law, or that he or she can call themselves a personal injury specialist if they practice no other area of law. This is not true, however, since the State Bar of Arizona prohibits attorneys from claiming to be a specialist unless they have become certified as such by the Board of Legal Specialization (BLS). Attorneys who wish to hold the title of certified personal injury and wrongful death specialist must first meet extensive eligibility criteria, which include:
- Active membership and good standing with the State Bar of Arizona
- At least 5 years of legal practice
- At least 2 years of practice in Arizona immediately prior to application
- Within 4 of the 6 years preceding application, at least 1,000 hours per year must have been dedicated to personal injury and wrongful death, 500 hours of which must have been dedicated to Arizona personal injury and wrongful death matters
The attorney must also submit qualifying personal injury cases worth $25,000 or more (or $10,000 or more if the case was resolved before December 31, 1999) to be evaluated as a test of skill in personal injury litigation. Other evaluations will be made of the applicant's competence and integrity, and references will be required for peer review purposes. Applicants must also provide evidence of continuing legal education of at least 12 hours per year concentrating in personal injury issues.
