Brendan Lyons, and his fiance, Lorena, stand out as clients. This firefighter and nurse couple were out for a birthday bike ride when a distracted driver ran them down from behind, changing their lives forever. Since the collision, Brendan has dedicated his time to the cause of road safety -- the simple idea that drivers and bicyclists must respect one another and share the road. His non-profit organization, Look! Save a Life, works to promote these issues. From working toward a statewide texting while driving ban to providing one-on-one help to those who impacted by distracted driving, Brendan has turned his unfortunate situation into a force for good and positive change.
Yesterday was a tough day in Tucson. In two separate collisions, both on the northwest side of town, several bicyclists were hit -- including a group of Colorado visitors who were struck by what appears to be an intoxicated driver behind the wheel of a commercial truck. Two of them were killed, dead at the scene.
It was a brutal challenge to Tucson's reputation as a bike friendly community. In the heart of the glorious weather that locals celebrate and visitors travel to enjoy, Tucson has seen an unacceptable number of bicyclists hit by drivers. Every collision brings a deep and wide ripple of impact. And these collisions can be avoided by focused and attentive driving and riding. All on the road have responsibilities. But let's be real about it, an instant's distraction behind the wheel will kill a bike rider.
This video that Brendan put together is now part of the presentations he gives. Yesterday, just as he heard the news of the mass collision, he was walking on stage to present to a group of TUSD high school principals. It is powerful, and at times tough to watch. But in the end it is a tremendous reminder of the responsibility we all accept when we shift into drive and head out on the road. I highly recommend you watch it.
