Last week I had the opportunity to welcome newly admitted students to the University of Arizona Rogers College of Law. It was Admitted Students' Weekend, and the school put on a great reception at the historic Pima County Courthouse. Excited pre-1L students and their families mingled with faculty, staff and some community alumni under a gorgeous spring sunset.
The U of A law school changed my life. At a moment when the rule of law – the core concept that no one is above the law, rules are plainly known, and disputes are resolved fairly on the merits – we need good people to step into the profession.
I shared what was unique about the U of A and its law school – ours is excellence without pretense. It is an environment where top-flight professors, who are leading voices on subjects ranging from trial practice to Constitutional and environmental law, are welcoming and accessible. Where talented and motivated students learn together in a collaborative setting. Best – all of this happens in a great town full of school spirit and great weather. Law school is stressful, and it's very important to study in surroundings that bring joy. Tucson certainly offers that!
Finally, I talked about the power of being a lawyer. Our role is to solve people's problems. My clients come to us with their biggest problems – often on their darkest day - and ask for help putting their lives back together. It is a great privilege to hear their stories, tell their stories, and use my legal training to assist.
I hope those who visited last weekend all decide to go to law school at the University of Arizona. And wish each one every success.
Bear Down!
