Purina Nestle has voluntarily recalled selected lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) dog food after Purina heard about two separate customers' dogs who suffered symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity. Luckily, once taken off the food, the dogs in question recovered.
While Vitamin D is generally good, too much isn't, and the symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling. Kidney dysfunction is a possibility.
This type of dog food is distributed nationwide but only available by prescription from a veterinarian. Thus, if you have it in your home, your dog likely has been dealing with other health issues.
The recall covers 8-pound and 20-pound bags with production code Nos. 2249 1082; 2250 1082; 2276 1082; 2277 1082; 2360 1082; and 2361 1082.
