Real ID Is Coming - Make an Appointment at AZ MVD!

Real ID is coming. Make an appointment now to upgrade your drivers license or other state-issued ID to a federally compliant Arizona Travel ID to avoid travel nightmares in 2020. Beginning in October 2020, TSA will only accept IDs that comply with federal regulations for domestic air travel.  Time flies, and you do not want to get stuck grounded at the airport.

Passports and military IDs remain acceptable for travel, but most Americans rely on their driver's license to clear airport security.  The majority of Arizonans, though, do not have a state ID that will allow them to fly.  The Arizona Department of Transportation reports that it has issued less than 500,000 federally compliant Arizona IDs.

Arizona has recently launched the "Don't Get Grounded!" campaign, which urges Arizonans to get to the DMV and upgrade their ID. It typically takes 10 days to receive your new license in the mail, and as crowds head in to get the new card, processing times could increase  The message is act now!  The DMV conveniently allows you to make an appointment, so getting in and out is quick, efficient, and easy.  You can also visit one of the many private, third party vendors around the state.  The lines there are typically small, though there is an additional convenience fee.

Do I need a new ID?

If your current ID has a gold star in the upper right hand corner, you are good to go.  If it does not have one, get to the DMV.

Starting October 2020, your ID must have a gold star to clear TSA.
