A skilled nursing center adjacent to Banner Kino Hospital and the Kino Sports Complex has become Tucson's Ground Zero for novel corona virus cases. Sapphire of Tucson Nursing & Rehab is a 240 bed facility that provides nursing care and rehabilitation services to patients.
On March 30, 2020 news broke that over 2 dozen COVID-19 cases were reported out of Sapphire. Given the testing guidelines and limitations, and the reality that asymptomatic individuals may be infected, the likely number of cases is higher.
Already families of Sapphire patients are telling their stories of alleged mismanagment of the situation and poor communication. KVOA's Lupita Murillo shared the story of the Ard family, and KGUN 9 reported on another family's experience.
